The Volkswagen Atlas is one of the most spacious and practical midsize SUVs on the market. It offers seating for up to seven passengers, a large cargo area, and a standard roof-rack system for extra versatility. It also comes with many standard and available features, such as IQ.DRIVE driver-assistance technology, VW Digital Cockpit Pro, and a 12.0-inch infotainment screen.
For 2024, the Atlas gets a major refresh, including a new look, a more powerful engine, and upgraded interior materials. The changes make the Atlas more attractive, more efficient, and more comfortable than before. Here’s what you need to know about the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas.
New Look, New Power
The most noticeable change for the new Volkswagen Atlas is the exterior design. The front fascia has been redesigned with new headlights, a new grille, and a new bumper. The rear end also gets new taillights and a new bumper. The overall effect is a more modern and refined appearance that matches the rest of the Volkswagen lineup.
The Atlas also gets new wheel designs for 2024, ranging from 18 to 21 inches in size. The R-Line models, which have a sportier look, get exclusive 21-inch wheels and R-Line badges. The Atlas also offers two new colors for 2024: Avocado Green and Pure Gray. These colors are only available with the Atlas Peak Edition package, which adds black exterior accents, black roof rails, and a black headliner.
The 2024 Atlas also gets a new engine option. The previous 276-hp V-6 engine has been discontinued, and the Atlas now comes with only a 269-hp turbocharged inline-four engine. This engine is more powerful and efficient than the base 235-hp turbo-four offered in the previous model year. The new engine also has a higher towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, the same as the old V-6.
The new engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front or all-wheel drive. The Atlas also has four driving modes: Eco, Normal, Sport, and Custom. These modes adjust the throttle response, steering feel, and transmission behavior to suit different driving preferences.
Upgraded Interior and Technology
The new Volkswagen Atlas also gets some improvements inside the cabin. The interior design has been updated with new trim pieces, new upholstery options, and new ambient lighting. The Atlas also offers more standard and available features, such as a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, a wireless charging pad, and a panoramic sunroof.
The biggest upgrade for the 2024 Atlas is the new 12.0-inch infotainment screen, which replaces the previous 8.0-inch unit. The new screen has a higher resolution, a faster processor, and a more intuitive interface. It also supports wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and HD Radio.
The Atlas also comes with a standard VW Digital Cockpit Pro, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster that displays various information, such as speed, fuel level, navigation, and driver-assistance settings. The driver can customize the display to show different views and data.
Another standard feature for the 2024 Atlas is the IQ.DRIVE® driver-assistance technology, which includes:
- Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection
- Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
- Lane-keeping assist
- Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function
- Travel assist, which combines adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist to help the driver maintain a set speed and distance from the vehicle ahead, as well as stay in the center of the lane
- Emergency assist, which can bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver is unresponsive
- Park assist, which can steer the vehicle into parallel or perpendicular parking spaces
The Atlas also offers other optional driver-assistance features, such as:
- A head-up display, which projects key information onto the windshield
- A surround-view camera system, which gives a 360-degree view of the vehicle’s surroundings
- A rearview camera mirror, which can switch from a conventional mirror to a camera view
- Traffic sign recognition, which can read and display speed limits and other road signs
